The Field Guide to the Orchids of the Australian Capital Territory by David Jones is an excellent and detailed field guide that describes all orchids (121) found in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) at the time of publication (2008).

The species are ordered alphabeltically by their scientific name. For each species there are two pages of information. This includes one colour photograph of the flower and a full page of carefully drawn illustrations. There is also detailed information on the plant’s characteristics so each species can be identified in the field.

In addition, the book provides various dimensions of the plant and flower, flowering times, distribution information for the ACT, and the habitat in which it occurs. There is a mixed index at the end of the book.

The book is a handy pocket size.

I can recommend this book and use it quite often. My only concern is that, especially for beginners, the new names can be confusing, as the book does not provide species name synonyms. This means it is hard to link some of the species listed under new names to their previous names.
