Woodland Flora: a field guide for the Southern Tablelands (NSW & ACT) is a great book for naturalists interested in discovering the plants of the woodlands of the Southern Tablelands. These woodlands are dominated by eucalypts and acacias and have a rich understory of grasses, forbs and shrubs.

This book was written as a companion to the Grassland Flora: a field guide for the Southern Tablelands (NSW & ACT) by the same authors and has a similar structure.

The plants are roughly organised by their main habit — trees, shrubs, climbers, forbs, orchids, ferns, rushes and sedges, and grasses. The tree section gives some good advice on which characteristics to look for when trying to identify eucalypts and acacias. There is also a section on exotic trees and shrubs, which are unfortunately also found commonly in many of our native woodlands.

In total, the book describes 444 plants found in these woodlands. For each plant there are one or two (sometimes three) colour photographs and a list of important characteristics to help identify the species. There are also notes on species distribution and habitat.

The book has a loose binding format, which makes it a useful guide to use in the field. This is an excellent book for beginners as well as for more trained naturalists. I strongly recommend it.
